Perception Technology is a commmunity on LiberaChat focused on perception sensors and systems. In short: we’re a (growing) community of professionals who are working a space that is a niche within a niche. Some of the topics we focus on are:
and more. Come drop by and say hi! The purpose of perception-tech is for anyone interested in sensors, so there’s no need to be an expert. As long as you’re interested in perception technologies, you’re welcome here!
LiberaChat is an IRC network first and foremost, so if you’re already familiar with using IRC, then
you’re likely already prepared to connect directly to the #perception
room on LiberaChat. If
you’ve never used IRC before, no worries, we’ve provided links to some resources below to get
started. In most cases those that haven’t used IRC before might find using a Matrix
client easier to use.
One should be able to connect to the chat through either an IRC client, or using some Matrix-powered client (e.g. Element, FluffyChat). We don’t (currently) have a bridged room since Matrix.org took down their bridge. See the Matrix FAQ for more information on how to use Matrix to connect to LiberaChat.
LiberaChat provides a comprehensive set of guides for getting started with IRC, as well as picking the right client.
If you're just starting out with IRC, we strongly suggest using the webchat to connect. The channel name is #perception
. Your
nick is generally unimportant but you may choose to eventually register it if you find yourself
sticking around on IRC often.
See our Code of Conduct page for our explicit code of conduct. It has been largely adapted from Mozilla’s contributor covenant, but to be very explicit:
Generally speaking, we follow the guidelines outlined by LiberaChat with regards to catalysing and de-escalation; however, one can expect to be held to a high standard. We are a group of peers with a diverse background and a shared interest in keeping the community a safe and welcoming space. As someone who participates in this community, you are expected to help shape and nurture it into a place that we all want to belong to.
We strongly advise giving this page a read. Seek DeeEff
(current
channel operator) via a query / direct message if you feel that intervention is needed. In the same
vein — please be respectful and don’t fan any flames if an operator asks you to drop something. It
would be nice if we can all get along, but if intervention is needed then it is best to walk away
and let our egos cool off rather than to keep boiling our frustration.
IRC can be seen by some as outdated or somewhat archaic by the year 202X. However, the open nature of IRC provides a much more open and enjoyable environment than closed, private systems (e.g. Slack, Discord) are.
IRC does not provide many “modern” bells and whistles by default. Whether that is a feature or a bug is up to the user. For users looking for features such as:
If you’re looking for these features, we humbly request you use a Matrix client & bridge. Ping
DeeEff
or a current chanop for help in setting that up.
At present, the only channel operator is DeeEff
. Feel free to ping DeeEff
if you have any
questions about the chat, community, or anything in general. Understand that chanops cannot always
be available (we must sleep sometime!) but we do try to be available as soon as we can be.
This happens often with IRC and asynchronous networks in general. If nobody was available then the best thing to do is wait: we all have jobs and times when we can’t be available. Generally, if you follow basic IRC netiquette then you’ll find that the community will respond in kind.
Admittedly, connecting to the channel via Matrix can sometimes be a boon in this scenario. Given that your connection can be maintained long-term with chat history enabled it can often be easier to wait for a response without having to sit and stare at your IRC client with bated breath.
Generally, we’re a community built around sensors, measurement, calibration, etc. For other topic specific requests we suggest finding the appropriate channel on LiberaChat. There are a number of good ways to search channels, but we recommend using https://netsplit.de.
With that said, there is currently no restriction with regards to offtopic or tangential discussion
in the chat. We prefer to keep it ontopic if possible (read that as: prioritize on-topic
discussions), but the community is currently not large enough that a separate #perception-offtopic
channel of any kind is necessary. This may change in the future.
